PLANE CIRCLES VOLCANO
SMOKE HIDES VIEW FROM PASSENGERS (P.A.) _ AUCKLAND, Jan. 11. The eruption of one of the world’s largest volcanos, Manna Loa, in Hawaii, was occurring when passengers who arrived at Auckland to-day by Skymaster from Vancouver were overhead, but none was able to see tlie spectacle. Cloud and smoke blotted out the sight of the lava flow and the spurting flames from the 13,650 ft high peak. The airliner circled, the volcano for about an hour.
The eruption began on Thursday, and in the first 24 hours is thought to have claimed two sightseeing aircraft. Suetioh and air turbulence are believed to be responsible for the aeroplanes disappearing. Some passengers on. the Skymaster saw an impressive colour *newsree,l of the eruption while they were in Honolulu.
