ABSENTEEISM AT AUCKLAND

MUCH LARGER THAN USUAL

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Many factories and large works found, on reopening after the holidays, that absenteeism was much larger than usual. “We could not have prayed hard enough,” said one factory-owner. The fine weather is blamed for the depleted staffs. Other employers are inclined to excuse the late return of some employees because of travel difficulties. One factory had 40 per cent of its staff absent to-day. Some reported full attendances. As many firms do not resume until to-morrow, some workers due to-day apparently decided to take an extra day without pay.
