Ashburton ForksGreenstreet

The unve|ling and dedication service of the Ashburton Forks - Greenstreet district roll of honour for the 1939-1945 war was held on Sunday in the Greenstreet Hall. The hall was filled to capacity,' many people being unable to find seats. The names of those who served overseas in the recent war are inscribed in gold letters on a very at-tractively-designed board, which will now hang on a wall at. the Greenstreet I-lali. Mr M. S. Turton (chairman of the local Patriotic Committee) presided, and an inspiring address was given by Mr W. V. Joyce (president of the Ashburton R.S.A.). Mrs J. R. D. White, widow of the late Pte. J. R. D. White, who Avas killed in Italy, unveiled the memorial. Mr R. Harris (local representative for the R.S.A.) placed a Avreath at the base of the 1914-1919 honours board, and Mr' J. S. Banks (the local serviceman Avith the longest overseas record) deposited a Avreath at the base of the 1939-1945 honours board, immediately following which Bandsman J. Jbeil, of the Ashburton Silver Band, sounded the Last Post. The Rev. W. C. Arnold read: the prayers of dedication, and this short and simple but impressive ceremony Avas brought to a conclusion by the singing of the National Anthem. } First Dance of Season The first dance of the season organised by the Ashburton Forks - Greenstreet Social Club was held on Friday last. Novelty dances Avere Avon by Mr W. Crouchley and Miss P. Hunt, Mr M. Hunt and Miss N. Hydes, Mr G. Crouchley and Miss M. Green. Mr V. Hunt was master of ceremonies and Mrs Gordon provided the music. The new chairman of the club is Mr V. Hunt, and the secretary and treasurer Mr G. McArthur.
