FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” May 19, 1898). Football—The football match Ashburton v. Sydenham was played on the-Domain. The weather was very wet and it rained in torrents nearly all the time, which made the grounds very sloppy and good play impossible. Both sides were so well matched that it looked as if it would be a drawn game, but .just before time was called Ashburton secured a try close to the corner flag, but failed to convert, and the scores when the whistle blew were: Ashburton, six points (two tries); Sydenham, three points (penalty goal).
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” May J. 9, 1923)1 Cycling Club —The Chertsey Cycling Club held a road race over a 13-mile course on Saturday afternoon. The roads were in good condition and the weather favourable. There were 23 riders started, including the hoy rider Mackie, who won the last -Timaru-to-Christchureh road race. Mackie started off scratch oh Saturday, and finished closie up to the placed men, and secured fastest time (38min. 33sec.). The race resulted: T. Ellis, Christchurch (2imin.), 1; A. McLauchlan, Chertsey. (3Jmin.), 2; W. Martin, Christchurch (grain.) 3.
