SAVAGE CLUB
Second Korero of Season ENTERTAINING PROGRAMME Music, song and story were splendidly interwoven to make an outstanding programme for the second korero of the Ashburton. Savage Club’s season, which was held in the Foresters’ Hall last night. The presiding chief was Brave R, Todd, who was inducted by Great Chief A. McLennan. Brave Todd had the full co-operation of members in the arrangement of this programme, with the. result that he was able to present an attractive array of items, all of which were splendidly received. An atmosphere of good fellowship again prevailed, and this contributed in no small measure to the success of the evening. Sixteen new savages were inducted by Ex-Great Chief A. H. Todd, Avho informed these members of tribal customs and responsibilities, and exhorted them to live up to Savafee ideals and to abide at all times by the laws of the trib’e.
Four visitors, including a member of the council of the Masterton Savage Club, and another, a former Ashburton Savage, were welcomed presiding chief. The small number of visitors was due to the fact' that the club membership has been closed at 200, and for the remainder of the season no local visitors will be permitted. The orchestra, under Musical Director R. Milligan, opened both sections of the programme with spirited numbers, while other items were:—Solos, Savage N. Reid; lightning sketches, Savage C. Kemble; violin solos, Savage W. Frazier; monologues, Ex-Great Chief A. H. Todd; legendemain, Savage R. Scott; solos, Savage L. Smith; cornet duets, Savages Milligan and C. - Leslie; sketch, Great Chief McLennan < and Savage J. Weeks; solos, Savage A. Zeigler. .« At a meeting following the korero, a special sub-committee comprising five members of the council and five floor members was set up *to discuss the annual ball and report back.
