RAW COTTON LOST

Serious Fire in Store

FIREMEN SAVE OTHER VALUABLE STOCKS

\ (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright). (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Sixteen thousand bales of raw cotton, worth over £650,000, and comprising three months’ cotton supply for the whole of Australia, were destroyed by fire late last night and early this morning. The'fire broke out in a bonded store in the southern suburb of Waterloo, and though it was under control at 3 a.m., the cotton was still blazing fiercely. The store, which was an iron building about 300 by 150 feet, belonging to the Department of Trade find Customs, contained machinery and car engines in crates in addition to the cotton. Firemen saved two other 'stores, one containing cotton and textiles, worth £1,000,000 and the other telephone and telegraph equipment valued at £2,000,000. About 60 motor-car bodies stacked in the cpep beside the burning building were severely damaged. The cause of the fire is not known. The cotton is expected to smoulder for a week.
