SOUTH ISLAND PUBLICITY

AGENDA FOR CONFERENCE NEXT MONTH Immigration and population, tourist trade, the establishment of an international airport in the South Island, the resumption of the Bluff-Melbourne service, the completion of the Haast Pass road, and the Christchurch exhibition and Empire Games are items on the agenda to be dealt with at the conference of South Island members of Parliament, representatives of local bodies, and the South Island Publicity Association, commencing at Dunedin on April 12. Concerning immigration, points to be considered are the necessity of speeding up immigration, a more progressive land policy, and the advisability of “insisting on at. least onethird of the total immigrants available as the minimum.” The tourist trade has been covered by a special report submitted by the Publicity Officer (Mr D. Cresswell). Special reports have been made on the establishment of an international airport. The first item to be considered is a proposal to increase local body unauthorised expenditure. It is divided into three clauses. They are: —(a) The need for an increase; (b) whether South Island local bodies and the South Island Publicity Association should be placed on an authorised list for subscriptions, travelling expenses, and publicity expenses; (c) the machinery necessary, and the limit.
