HINDS GYMKHANA

Record Attendance ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR A record number of spectators attended the Hinds gymkhana yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed a day packed with varied events, ranging from tlie Hinds Cup trotting race to a baby show. The gate takings amounted to over £l5O compared with last year’s record of £l2O. The day was line and sunny, though a strong wind prevailed. The programme began with the children’s running races and then ran through almost every conceivable type of event associated with gymkhanas. .During the greater part of the day several evenio were being staged at the same time in the ring, while trotting races were held on Miss J. Cuff’s six furlong track, adjacent to the grounds, and Highland dancing was conducted on a platform next the secretary’s office. Sheep dog trials followed the trotting events.. Athletes from Christchurch provided many exciting finishes, and some very good times were recorded considering the strong wind. The track was in excellent order. J. Oakley’s mile in 4mins. ■ 45secs, from scratch, was an outstanding effort. Mrs J. McQuilkin’s ikaroa scored a popular win in the Hinds Cup, the main trotting even of the day. Ikaroa started from 24 yards behind. Cyclists ‘ from all over the county took part in the events staged by the Tinwald Cycling Club, and thrills, spills, and close finishes abounded. The Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club members provided a real thrill in a track race. The track with corners not banked, was hardly suitable for speeding, but the riders took risks in plenty. There was one spectacular crash, but the rider-, undeterred, mounted his machine again and finished in third place. ~ _ .' The judge, Miss J. Welch, M.R.A.D., stated that the standard of dancing was excellent, and the large number of entries showed the interest taken in competitive dancing. Festive Spirit The novelty events provided outstanding sportsmanship, and gave much ampsement to competitors and spectators alike, engendering the festive spirit. Mention must be made of the gallant rider of the draught horse which was beaten on the post in a “photo-finish” to the Draught Hoise Derby. Congratulations go to the pig which refused .to be captured in the girls’ pig catching competition, and sympathy to the one which was snotved under by the boys. Mr H C. B. With ell .(Member ot the Ashburton County Council) officially declared the gymkhana .open. He congratulated the patron (Mi A. Donaldson), presdent (Mrs J. McQuilkin), members of the committee, and all those who had worked so hard to mako the day the success it was. The Mayor of Ashburton (Mr E. C. Bathurst) and Mr~J. Davidson (Ashburton County Council), also made brief speeches. An apology was received from Mr R. G. Gerard, M.P.
