VISIT TO LAKE HERON

ASHBURTON TRAMPING CLUB During the Eaeter vacation 17 members of the Ashburton Tramping Club made a trip to Lake Heron. The visit was made possible by the kind permission of Mr A. Urquhart. The shearers’ accommodation was made the headquarters, and the party prepared for a trip up the Cameron River. Thirteen members made the trip to the first hut, ejght miles from the lake. The trip to the second hut, at the foot of the glacier, was abandoned because of the bad weather. Despite the weather, a magnificent view of the glacier was obtained. On Saturday the party was worried by the rapid rising of the Cameron River which had to be recrossed. However, the crossing, with the aid of a rope was successfully accomplished. One hardy member carried an injured woman tramper shoulder high across lhe river. A trip round the edge of the lake to the loot of the Sugar Loaf was under taken on Monday morning, the wind at this time being at gale force. The trampers returned to Ashburton last evening, after l a meet enjoyable holiday. The president (Mr D. J. Sparrow) and secretary (Mr H. Childs) were accorded a vote of thanks for arranging the trip.
