ASHBURTON CLUB OPENING DAY The Ashburton Golf Club held a most successful opening day last Saturday. The attendance was the largest present at an opening day function for a number of years. The president, Mr C. J. Bonnington, welcomed members and friends and wished them a happy and successful season. Before play began members -stood in silence for the late Mrs H. W. Smallbone, who was an active member of the club. Mr and Mrs O. D. Sewell returned a very good card to win the mixed Canadian foursomes. Best scores were as follows: Mr and Mrs O. D. Sewell SG, 28—57; Mr and Mrs A. Martin 93, 28 —65; Mies E. Vesty and D. F. Gane 93, 28—G5; Mrs Walls and D. Silverwood 93, 26 —67; Mr and Mrs P. J. Clarke 95, 28—67; Mr and Mrs J. Allen 91, 23-—6 B; Mr and Mrs A. A. Caithness 92, 23 —69; Mrs W. Drummond and A. Sutton 93, 24 —69. CANTERBURY TITLE WIN FOR G. A. USSHER Steady and •attractive golf, particularly in the second round, was played by G. A. Ussher, of Timaru, when he won the Canterbury Benoit- amateur championships at. Shirley on Saturday when the Christchurch Golf Club opened its Easter tournament. Ussher’s score was 147 for the 36 holes—one stroke less than- J. L. Blair’s score when lie won the championship last year. Although the best score in the intermediate championship was returned by 0. G. Penlington, it was discovered that he had inadvertently entered for it when not eligible. The championship was won by A. G. Paterson, who tied with C. Cliff and won a play-off over IS holes. The junior championship was. won by R. T. Barrow with a score of 169. G. W. Benton (172) was the runner-up. Tim course at Shirley was probably drier than it lias been before for an Easter tournament and there was plenty of run along the fairways. The greens, however, were in exceedingly good order, and halls pitched well up stopped cpifekly. A full field of about 110 took part in the tournament.
