BRISBANE STRIKE

FREE LABOUR MAY BE USED (Rec. 10.55.) BRISBANE, This Day. Employers will attempt to use free labour on the wharves in Queensland ports to break the waterside workers’ strike. The joint committee of., the Waterside Employers decided to ask the Commonwealth Stevedoring Industry Commision in Sydney to allow' them to use free labour. The employers believe that of the Commission grants the request there will be more applicants than jobs. They plan to begin, on Wednesday, the loading and unloading of all ships tied up in Queensland ports. The Queensland watersiders have been illegally on strike in sympathy with the railwaymen for 25 days. Shipments of primary products worth about £10.000,000 are held up in Queensland. A Sydney message says that after April 21 no more refined sugar will be available to New South Wales wholesalers until the Queensland strike has ended. There may be a period without supplies, depending on how much longer the Queensland strike lasts. When the workers resume the ships will have to go north to discharge cargo, load sugar and bring it to Sydney for refining, the entire process taking several weeks.
