GREAT LOSS

DEATH OF LADY NOSWORTHY New Zealand in general, and Ashburton in particular, suffered a severe loss yesterday when the death occurred, at Oxford, of Lady Nosworthy, widow of Sir William Nosworthy, K.C.M.G.

A woman of sterling character, Lady Nosworthy had a wide circle of friends in this district and she will be greatly missed. Church work specially interested her and she was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone unfortunately placed. Her knowledge of politics was remarkable and this was another subject which commanded her closest attention.

Only a few days ago, Lady Nosworthy was shopping in Ashburton, and, considering her age of nearly 77, she appeared wonderfully fit. Some measure of consolation to her many friends is the fact that the end came very suddenly. Lady Nosworthy was the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs E. G. Wright, of Windermere, early settlers in this district. Mr Wright was also very prominent in politics and was Member for Coleridge, then Ashburton, for many sessions in the House of Representatives. He was a prominent engineer in his early, days, but took up sheepfarming in this district in 1877. Local politics interested him and he was a member of the County Council, chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and member of many other organisations. Lady Nosworthy was a member of the Cavendish Club, and of the Ashburton Sailors’ Society, while she performed excellent work over many years for the Anglican churches at Ashburton and Windermere. She is survived by a sister, Mrs C. C. Roberts, of Rotorua, and formerly of Ashburton,' and a niece, Mrs T. H. Pilbrow, of “Midlands,”* Oxford. The funeral will leave the residence of Mrs E. G. Moon, 18 North-East Belt, at 2 p.m. on Monday for Windermere Church, where a special service will be held.
