MARCH 26 1896 Colliery disaster at Brunner; 67 deaths. 1938 six killed when excursion train derailed at Ratana. 1942—U.5. Navy raids Wake and Marcus Islands. 1947 East Coast of Gisborne swept by tidal wave and extensive damage done.
