ALLENTON WATER SUPPLY
STEEL PIPES NOT AVAILABLE The present steel wire position was such that the company could not even commence manufacture of the pipes outlined in ‘‘schedule A” of the Allonion Water Supply specifications according to advice received from the Hume Pipe Company at a meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening. The outlook for the future was far from bright and the company doubted whether substantial steel supplies would come from Australia in the next 12 months. “We are. endeavouring to get steel elsewhere, hut costs might vary from £6O to £BO a ton. as against £3O a ton two years ago. This fact, together with the 50 per cent, increase in quarry products and rises in labour rates would make it, necessary to review the quotations given to the council in 1945,” the letter added. The letter was received.
