Factory in Orange Hall The Ashburton Borough Council last night decided to advise Tekau Knitwear .Co. that they had no objection to a factory being established in the Orange Hail area, provided that all care was taken to see that no nuisance was created.

Dangerous Corners It was decided at the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last night to request the Chief Traffic Inspector (Mr R. W. Dixon) to re-mark a plan of the town showing dangerous corners, and to mark in hedges or trees, etc, which were blocking visibility.

Building Permits Twenty new building permits totalling £ 13,84 S had been issued during last month, stated (lie report of the Ashburton Borough Engineer (Mr G. A. MacFarlane) presented at a meeting of the council last night. These included eight houses, valued at. £ 13',258. Royal Visit The Mayor (Mr E. C. Boxing School A request was received at the Ashburton Borough Council meeting last night for the use of the Allenton Fire Brigade Station for training purposes by the Ashburton Boxing Association. Permission was granted, the fee to be charged to be left to the Town Clerk (Mr R. C. Major) and the Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst).

Church of Christ Service

All- A. D. Lowe, pastor of the Church of Christ, was assisted at the service on Sunday morning by a visiting student, Mr K. Andrews, of Glenleilh College, Dunedin. The 21st birthday of the college was celebrated recently. Mr Andrews spoke at the evening service on Sunday.

House for Sanitary Inspector When the position of sanitary inspector was being discussed at the Ashburton Borough Council meeting last night, Cr. J. R. Richardson suggested that when the guard house at the aerodrome was moved into the Borough, it be earmarked for the sanitary inspector. Cr. H. F. McElrea: “He might not pass it.” (Laughter.)

Moving Rest. Room At the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last night the Town Clerk, in his report, suggested that the rest room he moved to the room at the Public Library at present being used as a sample-room. The matter was referred to the Library Committee for an estimate of the cost of the chafige.

Assistant for Library The Country Library Service, Christchurch, asked permission of the Ashburton Borough Council to allow Miss M. J. Hamilton, of’ their staff, work one day a month in the Ashburton Public Library. Miss Hamilton wished to gain additional experience to help her in the general training course of the New Zealand Libraries’ Association. Permission was granted, the council suggesting that Miss Hamilton work in the library one Tuesday a month.

Ashburton Postal District The Ashburton Borough Council decided last night to write to the Post-master-General (the Hon. F. Hackett) requesting that Ashburton he made a postal district. The Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) said that the county suffered disadvantages in not being declared a postal district. Towns both smaller and bigger than Ashburton were being declared postal districts. Mr R. G. Gerard, M.P., had taken the matter up with the Postmaster-Gen-eral but no move by the Government in the matter had been made.

Footpaths for Creek Road The Ashburton Borough Engineer, Mr G. A. MacFarlane, at a meeting of the Borough Council last night, recommended that a shingle path be constructed on the west side of Creek Road between Walnut Avenue and the bridge, and on the east side between Walnut Avenue and the water-race at an estimated cost of £GO. The provision of a footbridge three feet wide on the east side of the traffic bridge would cost £25. The council moved that the engineer’s recommendation be adopted.

The Rev. W. A. Stevely, when being installed as Moderator of the Synod of Otago and Southland for the centennial year, said that when Dr. Burns was appointed the first moderator of the Synod he had been minister of First Church for exactly the same length of time as Mr Stevely. some 18 years.
