Sergeant D. G. M. Simpson (Christchurch) fe- relieving Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett at the Ashburton police station. Senior-Sergeant Doggett is at present a patient in the Ashburton Public Hospial.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. McElhinney was passed at the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last night, and appreciation of his good services as a councillor was expressed by the Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst).

Misses Judith and Janet Thomas, daughters of Mr and Mrs J. Trevor Thomas, are to leave for Sydney tomorrow to further their nursing experience in Australian hospitals. They 'will be away from New Zealand for an indefinite period, and hope to travel further afield than Australia.

The Ashburton Borough Council last night accepted the resignation of Mr Jack White, who has retired after 22 years’ service on the council staff. The borough engineer (Mr G. A. MacFarlane) stated in his report that Mr White had been a thoroughly reliable and capable worker. Cr. S. Mitchell said he considered that Mr White had been one of the best workmen ever employed by the council. It, was decided to grant Mr White .13 weeks’ wages.
