RECONNAISSANCE IN ANTARCTIC

REPORT FROM WYATT EARP CANBERRA, March 19. The latest report from the Antarctic research ship Wyatt Earp gives details of aerial and surface reconnaissance made in the Commonwealth Bay area, off the coast of the Australian Antarctic sector. Aerial reconnaissance by Squadron Leader G. Gray in a Sikorsky Kingfisher revealed that the Ninnis glacier is 60 miles long, with a tongue composed of massive bergs up to 20 miles wide. The presence of a hitherto unsuspected submarine canyon off the tip of the glacier has been revealed by echo sounding gear. The primary object of this reconnaissance is to take observations in preparation for much more comprehensive 1 work next summer, leading up to the establishment of a permanent Antarctic base and scientific research station.
