MID-CANTERBURY LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION

WIND-UP OF SEASON Mr A. Stanley, president of the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub’Association, presented trophies won during the year at a function held at the Ashburton Club’s pavilion on Saturday afternoon. The Town v. Country match to have been played before the presentation ceremony was abandoned because of rain. Mr Stanley, in presenting the trophies, congratulated the winners and said that the association had enjoyed a very sucecssful season. They had fulfilled a heavy list of engagements and had been fortunate in experiencing only two wet days. The association owed a debt of gratitude to the Ashburton and Te Marae clubs for the use of their courts for representative matches. Matches for positions on * the county ladder had totalled 85 and competition had been very keen. He .was pleased to see the younger players coming on. In conclusion, Mr Stanley said that he wanted to thank the keen and live committee for its hard work during the season. He specially thanked Mr K. Fowke, who was retiring from the position of secretary. Mr Fowke had rendered sterling service, and the association had been very lucky to have a secretary who worked so hard. He would be sorely missed next season. The following is the list of trophies presented:— Handicap Tournament A Grade —Men’s Singles: P. J. Murray; runner-up, P. Jackson. Women’s Singles: Miss B. Vincent; runner-up, Miss M. Saddler. Men’s Doubles: J. Jackson and R. C. Stralil. Women’s Doubles: Misses B. Vincent and W. Wall. Mixed Doubles: P. J. Murray and Miss P. Cullen.

B Grade —Men’s Singles: D. Russell; rpnner-up, E. H. Bryant. Women’s Singles: Miss M. Hill; runner-up, Miss C. Leask. Men’s Doubles: J. H. Patterson and R. Patterson. Women’s Doubles: Misses J. McDowell and J. Kemp. Mixed Doubles: E. H. Bryant and Miss B. Blee.

Nicoll, president of the Ashburton Club, presented the following trophies won during the year by club members.
