FIFTY YEARS SYNE ‘(From the “Guardian,” Mar. 17, 189 S). A. and P. Association —The committee of the Canterbury A. and P. Association decided yesterday to call a conference of delegates from county councils and public bodies taking an interest in irrigation, with a view to collecting information, formulating a scheme, and bringing pressure on the Government to assist in the irrigation of the Canterbury plains'. The Pro* giessive Liberal Association on Monday passed a resolution to the effect that it would he inequitable to spend public money on irrigation, of -which the chief immediate result would be # to enhance the value of land owned by private persons.

Domain Baths —The Domain swimming pool came in for severe comment at Saturday night’s social of the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club, and npt the least of the critics was Mr W. H. Woods, president of the club, and chairman of the Borough Council’s Finance Committee. Mr Woods, during the course of a speech, had something to say regarding the future prospects for swimming in Ashburton. Had the Domain Baths not been in existence, he considered Ashburton >vould have had decent facilities for swimming a long time ago.
