Dominion Contest at Dunedin

NEW PIPES ON HAND The Asliburton County Scottish Society’s Pipe Band leaves for the Dominion Pipe Band eonest next- Thursday. The band will take part in the B grade championship and the quickstep, selection and drum-major’s* display contests. Twenty-eight bandsmen will make (lie trip and they will travel by bus. O.nc-o again Chief Sinclair will travel willi the band. This is Iho first year that the band will take part in the drum-major’s display, an event- that requires great skill on the part of the drum-major and concentrated practice by the remainder of Hie band. The display consists of marching and counter-marching by the band in intricate movements. The bandsmen, are playing all the while, and the movements must be completed before 12 minutes, but must take 10 minutes. The secretary, Mr D. Grant reports that the 16 sets of new pipes- are on band, and members feel that they will greatly assist the hand at the contest. In the Dominion contest at Wanganui last- year the hand finished fourth in the aggregate points. Thl band is going to Dunedin determined to do its best to uphold the standard set by the Ashburton Silver Band in the recent contest.

The public will have an opportunity to hear the pipe hand in their final pre-contest performance to he held in the Domain next Sunday.
