JUNIOR LABOUR LEAGUE

PARTY VISITS TIMARU About 20 members of the Ashburton branch of the Junior Labour League visited Timaru last evening, talcing part in a debating competition with .the Timaru branch of the league. By (title narrow margin of a single point the home team won • the shield, assessed on this occasion on the impromptu speech and debate sections of the evening. Timaru took the negative side m the debate on the subject “That food rationing and price control in New Zealand should be abolished.” The Ashburton team was led by Mr Bloomfield, who was supported by Misses W. Drummond and L. Kennedy. Honours in the prepared speech section came tb Ashburton, Mr C. Simmy being the winner, with the subject, “This, our enlightened age.” Jn the impromptu contest Ashburton speakers filled first, and second places. Mr Sliamy topped the section and Mr Bloomfield was second. Mr F. Peace also spoke for Ashburton. The shield was presented 1o Timaru by Mrs Anne Newlands, who expressed pleasure that youth should be taking so active an interest in the affairs of their country. She expressed the hope that an early return contest. would be held in Ashburton.
