Scotland, who made some of the first flights in New Zealand in his Caudron biplane. He endeavoured to organise the forerunner of the modern air mail service, having arranged with Mr Scotland to drop mail at Temuka on his Timaru-Christchurch flight,'which proved’ to be a pioneer cross-country trip. The mail was dropped on schedule near the railway station; but the aircraft developed engine trouble shortly afterwards, and had to land at Orari. Mr Andrews went to repair it, and found that two ignition wires had crossed and the engine had been running on four of the six cylinders.
