LOOKING RACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 13, 1897). “Keep to the Right”—On several occasions we have urged the Borough Council to have tickets posted along the main street with the advice -written on them, “Keep to the right.” A correspondent has written to us asking us to renew the suggestion, in the hope that frequent iteration of it may have the effect of inducing the Mayoral candidates to move in the matter. There are people in Ashburton who are so ignorant of the rule of the road as to believe that what applies to the road in driving a trap is also, applicable to the footpath. In 1 this they are, of course, wrong, and as a consequence people who observe the correct rule when the street is crowded get badly bumped against by the people on the wrong side.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

(From the “Guardian,” Nov. 13, 1922). American Athletes —The proposal to bring to New Zealand a team of American athletes is still in the air so to speak. In view of a possible tour of these athletes, the Christchurch centre recently asked the Ashburton club if it would guarantee £SO towards the expenses of their stay in Canterbury. This sum was too large—the club couldn’t look at it, but it did offer £3O. That’s as far as things stand now. Of course if the tour does eventuate, Ashburton will have a meeting in which the Americans will take part.
