AIRPORT CHARGES

IMPOSITION ON COMPANIES (Rec. 12.45) MELBOURNE, This Day. . From Friday a new scale of airport charges will operate throughout AumDetails of the system of charges, announced by the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr A. S. Drakeford, are described a “bombshell” by private operators. / The Skymaster airliner on the trip from Melbourne to Sydney will pay £l3 15s 6d the Commonwealth for aviation facilities used. Over the same route a Douglas D.C.3 will be charged £4 14s 6d. Other charges are: Adelaide to Perth: Skymaster £27 11s ; D.C:3, £9 9s. The charges will apply to Govern-ment-owned as well as to privatelyoperated airlines. Revenue from this source is estimated at £300,000 a year.

The general manager of Australian National Airways, Mr H. F. Walsh, claims that the charges are not ,assessed payment for the use of facilities but are an imposition designed to put private operators out of business.
