Quota Just Exceeded Ashburton just exceeded its national savings quota this week. Deposits at tlje Post Office for the week totalled £737, £32 above the quota.

Child Born on Ferry On a recent morning when no doctor happened to he on board, a stewardess in the Rangitira took the part of a doctor when an urgent maternity case arose, and she delivered the child safely. It was not the first time the same stewardess has had to act similarly. School Bell

Cast in 1845, a memorial bell procured for the West own School, New Plymouth, by the New Plymouth City Corporation, has arrived from England. It stands about 2ft' 6in high and weighs over 4cwt. It arrived in perfect condition except for scars it bears on its edge as a result of bombing. The bell was obtained from the Church of St, Michael, Devonport, Plymouth.

Old Girls’ Basketball Dance A most successful dance in aid of funds to defray the Dominion tournament expenses was held in the Foresters’ Hall last evening by the- Ashburton High School Old Girls’ Basketball Club. There was a good attendance and the function was much enjoyed. Music was played by Mrs Gordon and Mr J. Hawkes. Novelty dances were won by Mr E. George and Miss M. Denley, Mr L. Henderson and Miss Denley, and Miss B. Whiting and partner.

1200 Watches Stolen Twelve hundred watches consigned to a firm in Dunedin were pillaged from the cargo of the Kent during the ship’s stay in Auckland last month. The value of the watches is estimated at almost £SOOO. They were packed in four wooden cases. The Kent arrived at Auckland on June 9, and remained there until June 20, and later discharged cargo at Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. It was not until the vessel- reached Dunedin that the theft was discovered. —P.A.

Saving of Food Coupons Food coupons totalling 4761 were saved in the campaign to help Britain in Ashburton this week. The total was made up mainly of meat coupons, which numbered 4687, while there were also 74 butter. As usual the Ashburton Technical was the main contributor. Its savings amounted to 3531 meat and 18 butter coupons. Allenton primary school forwarded 448 meat and 12 butter coupons. Another unidentified school also made contributions.

Smiles For The Judge A young wife', giving evidence of alleged cruelty on the part of her husband, smiled continually as she told Mr Justice Fleming all about it in the Supreme Court at Timaru yesterday. She was referring to words she had with her husband, on the subject of her going home to her mother when his Honour asked her: “Did you smile at your husband when .i you -told him that?” “Oh, no,” replied the /respondent.-“I never smiled at him as * much as 1 smile at you.”
