Holed In One Playing at-the Ashburton golf links recently a lady player, Miss Thelma Cowan, holed out in one at Shorty (105 yards). Stock On County Roads Stock found wandering on Ashburton County roads during the last months, all being cattle, were distributed as follows: Ashburton Riding 30 head, Rangitata 13, Upper Ashburton 23 and Wakanui 7.

Pharmacy Training An amendment to the pharmacy regulations gazetted last night makes provision that in a pharmacy wffiere two or more pharmacists are employed a former serviceman may also be employed as an apprentice, in order to facilitate his training.—P.A.

County Fund Account According to information placed before the Ashburton County Council today the county fund account shows a debit balance of £33,174 11s lOd. Expenditure since the last meeting of (he council was £10,714 6s 3d, and receipts totalled £6992 14s 6d.

Stock Figures for Saleyards During September 1850 sheep and 23 cattle were handled at the Tinwald saleyards and 1100 sheep and seven cattle at the Ashburton yards. Up to date this year 75,548 sheep and 729 cattle have passed through the Tinwald pens and 29,171 sheep and 67 cattle through the Ashburton yards. These figures were given to the Ashburton County Council to-day.

Free Kindergarten Association The president (Mrs E. C. Bathurst) presided at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton' Free kindergarten Association yesterday. Arrangements for a street day were finalised, and the secretary (Mrs. N. E. H. Fulton) gave a brief account of information gained at a meeting of the executive committee of the N.Z. Free Kindergarten Union at Wellington. A full discussion of kindergarten affairs was held over until next month, when the official minutes of the meeting of the Dominion executive will be to hand.

Ministerial Appreciation Expressed The secretary of the Ashburton Cycle Tyres and Tubes Committee (Mr C. F. Horrill) has received from the Minister of Supply (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) a letter of thanks for services performed during four years of rationing. The Minister says: “1 wish you to know I have not under estimated the sacrifice made by your members, and would express the sincere appreciation of myself and the Government to all members of your committee for the valuable voluntary service given in the public interest.’

Voluntary Aids For Japan It is understood that in the district there are some voluntary aids desirous of going to Japan to serve with the I'Jew Zealand occupation force when 'another opportunity arises. To be qualified to go to Japan, aids must have obtained certificates- in homenursing, first-aid, sanitation and hygiene and as well have done 60 hours’ training in- a hospital. They must of course, be over 22 years of age. Mrs Li. W. Christmas hopes to conduct a class for such girls, who have not yet obtained sanitation and hygiene cer tificates, so that they may have an opportunity of doing so.

Rangitata in Good Fishing Order The Rangitata is in wonderful condition,” said a fisherman this morning “There are plenty of trout.” The Ashburton is dirty at present, but may improve, while the Hinds is both high and dirty. Mr R. Patterson has takeh 17 trout from the Rangitata by worm The fish weigh from one to three or four pounds. Mr D. Smith has caugh! from six to eight trout in the _ same river. There was some whitebait runfling on the Timaru side yesterday and there are also some silveries in the river. If there is no north-west wind during the week-end the Rangi tata should provide good sport. ,

Mrs David Newlands in County Mrs David Newlands, official Labour candidate for the Ashburton electorate, briefly addressed friends and supporters- at meetings at Rakaia on Wednesday evening and at Hinds last evening. At Rakaia there was anattendanee of 208, with Mr F. McAnulty in the chair. Mr A. J. Kearton presided over a gathering of 73 at Hinds. Mrs Newlands appealed to electors to take a reasonable and logical view of the main issues at stake. A committee was formed at Hinds. The Ashburton branch met last evening when Mr J. H. Ward (president) presided over an attendance of 31.

Truck Supplies The truck supply position in New Zealand would no doubt be relieved next year through increased import licences, but at present it was critical in some cases, said the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) at a meeting of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance yesterday, says a Press Association message. Mr Laurenson said he had been assured by the Army authorities only on Wednesday that they had nothing left except Army type trucks, so the only sources were dealers and importers. Importers ought to have fair supplies by 1947, and the industry would have to battle along until then.

Hotel Destroyed Fire destroyed the Terminus Hotel at Hakataramea at 12.45 on Thursday morning. The licensee, Mr Lester James Blain, his wife, and six-year-old son, and two female employees escaped in their night attire. The wooden building of two storeys, a landmark in the district for more than 60 years, was quickly a mass of flames, and no opportunity was afforded of salvaging any personal effects. It is believed that the fire was caused by a defective chimney. The building was the property of the Molloy estate, of Oarnaru, and was insured, but details of the insurance are not available. The licensee will suffer heavy loss.

Fire Pumps for Ashburton While in Wellington recently, the chairman of the Ashburton County Council, Mr M. S. Turton, and the County Clerk, Mr G. Kelly, made inquiries in regard to the council’s tender for trailer fire pumps, and were informed that the pumps had been withdrawn from sale. They then interviewed the Inspector of Fire Brigades, who said that new proposals were under way regarding the disposal of these pumps, and advised the council to make application for a pump on the basis of its utilisation for plantation as well as township protection. This has been done, reported Mr Turton to this morning’s meeting of the council.
