COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING QUESTION OF PETROL STORAGE Ashburton County affairs were dealt with at the monthly meeting of the council to-day, when Mr M. S. Turton presided over the following:—Crs. H. C. B. Witliell, W. G. Gallagher, S. P. Taylor,' H. A. Harrison, M. D. McDowell, L. L. Richards, J. Carr, J Bland, H. A. McKenzie and J. T. Morgan. * Regarding the matter of petrol stor age, a letter was received from Mr R. G. Gerard M.P., stating that the Minister of Internal Affairs had advised that the regulations regarding petrol storage must be compiled with, and suggested the use of small road tank waggons mounted oil trailers. A proposal by the works committee that the engineer (Mr R. L. Lindsay) be directed to report oil the best means of complying with the regulations was approved. < - The chairman reported that, Avlnle in Wellington recently, he and the County Clerk (Mr G. Kelly) inteiviewed the secretary of the Local Government Loans Board and discussed the proposed machinery loan. They were informed that the application was likely to be considered by the hoard within a month and that, in the meantime, the board were obtaining ports regarding the application. The South Canterbury Catchment Board wrote asking that a stophank in the Hinds riverbed, at Mr Baxter’s place, Mayfield, be removed when plant is available. It was reported that there was doubt as to who erected the bank in the first place, and Cr. McKenzie and the engineer were appointed to inquire into this point.

Cracroft Stock Race

The irrigation engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr J. Riddell) advised that provision would .be made to supply up to 25 cusecs for Cracroft Stock /Race at a point near tlie intersection of Cracroft and Rangi tata River Roads. “I shall be pleased”: he added “if you will advise mq whether the proposals contained in my letter of April 23, 1945, regarding the proposed agreement for the supply of (lie water is satisfactory to your council. If so, will' you please advise tlie yearly maintenance charges incurred by your council on the intake and upper 3m 49cbs of Cracroft race which youi council is agreeable to pay in consideration of the alternative supply. The letter was received. # . A formal resolution regarding a closed road in north Rangitata town reserve was carried. > The Commissioner of Crown Land wrote v.ith reference to Smite River, “I agree with you that the cost of removing the buildings to higher ground should be considered before any further expenditure on protection work is incurred.” A lengthy report on the position was submitted-by the engineer.
