HIT WITH SPADE

FARMER IN HOSPITAL

(P.A.) WHANGAREI, August 28. Gilbert Hayes, a farmer of Tapuhi, was admitted to the Kawakawa Hospital suffering from concussion and a compound fracture of the lower jaw. This afternoon Horace Underwood, aged 29, labourer, was charged with having, at Tapuhi, assaulted Hayes so as to cause actual bodily harm. Applying for a remand until September 11, Senior-Sergeant Crowley said it was alleged that Hayes approached Undei'wood where he was working at a fence and said he would not pay Underwood for leaning in his spade. It was alleged that Underwood then struck Hayes with the spade. A remand was granted by Mr W. C. Harley, S.M., who directed that Underwood should be examined by an officer of the Mental Hospitals Department.
