For private and personal reasons the Labour member for Dunedin Central, Mr Peter Neilson, announced yes-,, terday that lie Avould not be a candidate at the forthcoming General Election, says a Press Association message. On retiring from politics, Mr Neilson intends to reside at Gisborne.,

“Since our last meeting Ave have lost one of the keenest members, Mr J. S. Weeßs,” stated the president, Mr W. V. Joyce, at the quarterly meeting of the Ashburton R.S.A. last evening. “For ■ years he Avas one of our most active members, and he did a great deal of work for us. No job Avas too hard or too heavy for him to tackle.” A motion of sympathy to the relatives of Mr Weeks was passed by nil present standing in silence.

Appreciative reference to the Public Service Commissioner, Mr J. 11. Boyes, Avhose retirement will take place soon, Avas made by resolution at the annual conference of the Public Service Association in Wellington yesterday. The resolution recorded the appreciation of Mr Boyes’s uniformly courteous and co-operative attitude toward representations from the association, and also ot his services to the Government and the public in administering the Public Service during the most strenuous and difficult period of its history.

The death occurred in Wellington yesterday at the age of 65 of Brigadier Harold Rinimer, of the Salvation Army. Brigadier Rimmer was a. AvellknoAvn officer, says a Press Association message. Originally he Avas captain in charge of Mastevton and served successively at Stratford, Patea, Wellington, Pukekoha, Auckland, Cambridge, Levin, Onehunga, Thames, Hamilton, Wellington! South, Fielding and Christchurch, after he assumed control of the aged men’s retreat at Wallaceville. He retired in 1940 after 42 years of service. He is survived by his wife and seven children.
