OBITUARY

MRS EMILY G. DENHAM Mrs E. G. Denham, who died in Ashburton recently, will be remembered by many older residents for the variety of her interests and the many activities in which she took part. Born at Richmond, Nelson, Mrs Denham came to Ashburton in 1898 at the age of 20. As a member of the staff of Friedlander Bros., she held the dis tinction of being one of the first persons -in. Ashburton with a working knowledge of shorthand. In her early days, Mrs Denham was a member of St. Stephen’s choir. She was also secretary of the Ladies’ Guild for a time, and was vice-president until a few months before her death. A foundation member of the Ashburton Plunket Society, Mrs Denham was a member of the first committee. She also worked for the Dorcas Society, an organisation which preceded the Red Cross Society. Keenly interested in sport, Mrs Den ham was one o'f the first golfers in Ashburton, and she was able to recall Avhen the Ashburton Club’s links were at the present showgrounds and later at the racecourse. Besides being lady champion, Mrs Denliam introduced the L. system of handicapping. Tennis was another* of her interests, and she was women’s champion of the Ashburton Club. Mrs Denham was also a keen fancier, exhibiting poultry at local and outside shows. Mrs Denham was twice married. Her first husband was. Mr Moritz Friedlander. She is survived by her second husband, Mr E. A. Denham, Buckley’s Terrace, and three sons, Messrs M. M. Friedlander (Wellington), O. M. Friedlander (Raetihi) and Cuthbert Denham (Ashburton). Another son, Mr Desmond Denham, died in 1936.

MRS C. M. WILLERS The death occurred at Te Awamutu recently of Mrs Christina Maud Willers, wife of Mr Ernest Victor Willers. The late Mrs Willers was born in Ashburton in 1897, being the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Cox, who were early settlers in the district. She was married at Ashburton in 1921. Mr and Mrs Willers were chums from childhood. Leaving Ashburton, Mr and Mrs Willers shifted to Wellington, where the former was engaged in the Union Bank of Australia for five years. Residence in Timaru, Oamaru and Dunedin followed, Mr and Mrs Willers finally settling in Te Awamutu in 1938. Mr and Mrs Willers celebrated their silver wedding anniversary this year. Mrs Willers is survived by her husband, who is well known in musical circles in Te Awamutu, and three children, Myrie (Mrs Shone), Barry and Denny.
