NEW THEATRE
ASHBURTON NEED TO BE FILLED I,’ ’ \ HAVELOCK STREET SITE Another long-felt want In Ashburton, a new theatre, will be filled as soon as a permit is obtained ar\d the material is available. Advice to this effect was received by Mr E. T. Broker, local manager of Fullers’ Theatre Corporation, Ltd., from Mr E. J. Kerridge, managing-director of the corporation. The site of the new theatre is a section in Havelock Street (near the library) purchased for the purpose some years ago. It will be of the very latest design, with full stage facilities for both touring and local theatrical and kindred purposes. Entertainment lovers of Ashburton will benefit considerably by the move, for it is intended that the new building will be available for all visiting companies and for all local societies and important gatherings. But for the war, the new -theatre would probably already be in ‘ existence, but the troubled recent years precluded any possibility of a start being made. The corporation, however, are pushing the project now to their utmost, and it is confidently hoped that a permit will be obtainable, in the near future. As soon as that is secured, a start will be made with the preliminary work and the actual construction will begin very shortly after.
