FUTURE RULERS OF INDIA
Names Submitted to Viceroy (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 23.. t Twelve men have been named of 13 who will rule India in the interim Government until she gains her independence and holds elections, says the “Daily Tele- - graph.” Mr Pandit Nehru has submitted six leading Congress Hindu names to the Viceroy—his own and those of Messrs V. Patel, C. Rajago Palachari, Sarat Sandre Bose, Jagjivan Ram and Dr, R. Prasad, of the Castes.
The Government as a result of Mr Nehru’s proposals to the Viceroy, will include five Moslems who - are not members of the Moslem League, These are believed to include Asaf Ali, also Ali Zahir and Sir Shafaat Ahmed Khan. Names believed to have been submitted for minority representation include Sardar- Baldey Singh for the Sikhs, Dr. J. Mathai for the Indian Christians, possibly Mr F. Anthony for the Anglo-Indians and a Parsee representative. •
The “Caretaker” Government of India has resigned, says Reuter’s New Delhi correspondent. It is assumed that the new Government will be announced as early as possible, probably after Mr Nehru meets Lord Wavell this, afternoon.
Rioting at Dacca
. The police fired to disperse crowds after a series of clashes at Dacca, in Eastern Bengal. Ten persons are reported to have been killed and 15 injured in disturbances in the last two days. Business bad been brought to a standstill and the streets are deserted. .Gatherings of more than five are prohibited. Calcutta is quiet, and the trams are operating under escort. It is announced that British troops suffered no casualties during the riots. Homeless numbering nearly 100,000 are being assisted.
