Bowling Club At the annual meeting of the Methven Bowling Club held on Monday, July 2S, Mr R. J. Adams (president) presided over a good attendance of members. The president's report showed that the club had had a very successful year, and the treasurer’s balance-sheet proved that the club was in a very good financial position. The president referred to the loss suffered by the club by the deaths of Messrs J. T. Mangin and W. Stevens and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. The following are the officers for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr J. Watson; president, Mr W. J. Owen; senior vice-president, Mr J. Smith; junior vice-president, Mr R. Smith; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. E. Triggs; auditor, Mr Geo. Currie. Weather Observations The following are the meteorological observations lor July, as recorded by Mr James Carr, “Rudstone” Methven. Rain fell on 13 days, the maximum fall on any one day being 0.73 on the 23rd, (3.99). The total for the month was 2.08, compared with (5.07 inches for July last year. The average rainfall for July for the last 38 years is 3.33 inches. The wettest July during that period was in 1912, with 11.15 inches, and the dryest was in 1(140 with 0.50 points. The total this year to date is 22.29 inches against 32.75 inches for the same period last year. The highest leading for the barometer was 1022.0 millibars on the sth (1026.4) and the lowest value 992.2 on the 14th (995.6). The highest reading on the maximum thermometer was 58.3 on. the 23rd (58.5), and the lowest reading of tlie minimum thermometer was 28.0 on the 7th (24,3). The lowest reading bn the grass was 16.8 (15.3). The range of temperature was 14.5 (15.5) and the average mean temperature 43.0 (47.9). Miles of wind totalled IS4B (1821), evaporation 1.510 (1.004), hours of bright sunshine 127. S (157.4). Frosts in the screen totalled 7 (21) and on the grass 22 (25). Snow on the ground nil, last year 19.

MT. SOMERS NEWS

INITIAL R.S.A. BALL The first annual ball of the Alford branch of tlie Returned Soldiers’ Association, held in the Memorial Hall. Mt. Somers, was an outstanding success. The ballroom was gaily decorated with evergreens, streamers and coloured lights. Music was supplied by Dabourn’s orchestra anj Mr T. McNeill was M.C. Mr W. Webb (president) thanked all helpers and supporters. The net proceeds were for the Blind Soldiers’ Institute.

St. Aidan's Church

At a largely - attended combined meeting of the Mt. Somers vestry and ladies of the parish, arrangements were made for the patronal festival of St. Aidan’s. If was decided to reinstate the parish ball, dropped during the war, and Ibis will be held on August 30. The Rev. E. A. Osmers, a former vicar, will be the preacher at Evensong on Augusl 30 and at the services on the Sunday.

Arrangements were also made to celebrate the parish’s 501 h jubilee at All Saints fide, to which all past and present parishioners and clergy are to be invited. It was decided to mark the celebrations at Ml. Somers with a high tea and social on Friday, November 1, a children’s party on Saturday and special services on Sunday, November 3.

Slade, delegate to the recent Dominion Conference in Wellington, gave a comprehensive report to members, and on the motion of Miss Stevens, she was accorded a vole of thanks. The motto for the month was: “Let each man do his best.” Competitions resulted: —Best bloom, Mrs Chappell 1, Miss Oram 2, Mrs Donnelly and Mrs N. Willis (equal) 3; floating bowl, Mrs Willis 1, Mrs Bennison 2, Mrs Jamieson 3; three leeks, Miss R. Chappell 1, Mrs Frazer 2, Mrs Slade 3; three plain scones, Mrs Donnelly 1, Mrs Chappell 2, Mrs Jamieson child’s feeder, Mrs Donnelly 1, Mrs Frazer 2, Mrs Chappell 3. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Deuart and B. Donnelly.
