ASHBURTON ENGINEER’S REVIEW Reporting to tlie Ashburton County Council meeting this afternoon, the engineer (Mr It. L. Lindsay) made the following, comments on, work carried out during the past month: “Good supplies of water have been maintained at all intakes and 1 lie water-race gangs have been mainly employed on grubbing gorse. Langdon’s Creek was cleaned out during the month and a number of reserves cleaned up. “Alford Forest cemetery was cleaned up, fences repaired and gates painted. Grass at the Hinds cemetery was mowed and the area generally tidied up. A start has been made on the cleaning up of Highbank cemetery._ “The output from the crushing plant during the month was 25% cubic yards, portion of which was spread on roads in' the Springburn-Alford Forest district and portion placed in stock piles for future use. The crusher is now operating from a new pit and shifting time was responsible for a drop in the output. “Angledozer No. 2 was engaged chiefly in clearing up gorse and broom from Council reserves and lowering spoil banks along water-races. At present it is repairing wash-outs and removing slips on the Double Hills Runs road.

“During the period the bridge gang was engaged on the following works: Erection of a temporary bridge over the Windermere drain on Poplar Road (this was work carried out in agreement with the South Canterbury Catchment Board); extension and repairs to water-race flumes in Fleming’s Estate and McMullan’s, Lismore; alteration to flume in I). Robertson’s, Elgin ; erecting stock bridge over Mt. Somers main race on hack, road to Peache’s estate, dismantling fire bell tower at Allentou and reerecting same at Methven. “At the request of the Public Works Department the Council undertook Ihe work of forming the approaches to the Rakaia Gorge bridge which js now open to traffic. The old timber bridge is being dismantled and advt;? has been received that some of the landwood timber will be made av<*.'hi,:>le for sale to this council, should it be required.”
