COUNTY AFFAIRS

ASHBURTON COUNCIL MEETING Ashburton County affairs were dealt with at the monthly meeting of the council to-day, when Mr M. S. Turton presided over the following: Crs. H C. B. Withell, W. 6. Gallagher, L. L. Richards, M. D. McDowell, S. P. Taylor, J. Carr, J. Bland, H. A. McKenzie, H. A. Harrison and J. T. Morgan. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr A. Hawke for his services as water-ranger at Hinds, members speaking eulogistically of his valuable work. Mr R. A. Elms, having returned from overseas, had been reinstated to the position. The Mayfield branch of Federated Farmers wrote urging the council to defer purchase of additional road maintenance plant until investigation had been made of a possible long L term policy. On the recommendation of the works committee, the chairman and the engineer (Mi”R. L. Lindsay) were empowered to reply quoting figures to show how costly such a programme would be. , , . The South Canterbury Catchment Board forwarded suggestions regarding the culvert on Windermere Road.
