4,000,000 Tons Burnt Since 1941 (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 1. Because of the coal shortage two electricity supply companies have burnt more than 4,000,000 tons of grain under their boilers as substitute fuel sin,ee 1941, states the “Daily Express.” This would be enough to honour all the bread units in Britain for 40 -weeks. It is eighty times the amount of wheat Mr John Strachey (Minister of Food) calculates that Britain shall have in stock at the end? 1 of August. The figures, says the “Express,” are given in the annual report of Sofina, a big Belgian power group, of which Sir Bernard Docker, Lord Swinton and Lord Wigram are directors.
