ZONES IN GERMANY
PRESSURE OF ECONOMIC EVENTS (Rec. 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 31. Pressure of economic events may oblige the Eastern Zone in Germany to seek closer relations Avitli the Western Zones. This was 'indicated by au authoritative article printed in the Sovietcontrolled journal “Diewirtshaft,” says the Berlin correspondent of “The Times.” The journal says: “The reduction of industrial capacity caused by the delWery of industrial plant for reparations, and shrinking stocks of raw materials which were reflected in the substantial gap between planned and reAflsed production in the second quarter of 1940 have enhanced the importance of inter-zone exchange of goods and foreign trade.” The paper describes the' raw material situation in the Eastern Zone as’serious. It draws attention to the lack of iron, hard coal, coke, leather and cotton.
