Chifley, said thjs would be done at the request of the King so that the Duke may see his Majesty before he leaves for South Africa; and during the King’s absence act as a Councillor of State. . Mr Chifley said that when the Duke was appointed Governor-General, it was understood his tenure of office would be about two years. The Duke would have held office for two years on January 30 next.
