LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNB (From the “Guardian,” Aug. I, 1896). Hockey.—A very interesting game of hockey between teams chosen by Messrs Broad and Porteous was played at the Ashburton Domain oh Saturday. After a very exciting game the former proved victorious by two goals scoring eight to their opponents’ six. Mr Cowlisliaw acted as referee and Dr. Leahy as umpire. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO .(From the “Guardian,” Aug. 1, 1921). Improvements at School. —The longpostponed ground improvements at the Borough School are now being taken in hand, tenders having been called for a concrete assembly court. This will extend the width of the school and come out 50 feet into the-grounds. The plan made provision for narrow flower beds under the windows. On the completion of this work the grading of the remainder of the school ground will be undertaken. The Government, will subsidise the expense as it is incurred.
