HUMAN RIGHTS
COMMISSION SET UP (Rec. 12 noon) LONDON, Jan. 21. Meeting under the presidency of the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, New Zealand, members of Ilie United Nations Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee unanimously elected M. Fernando Harrison (Costa Rica), vice-chairman. The committee formally approved of the setting up of a commission on human rights by the Economic Council. The committee adopted a pro* posal to establish a commission on narcotic drugs. The Chinese delegation supported the- proposal. Mr Fraser expressed the hope that under the new organisation more effective methods would be taken to stamp out the evil. Tlie Economic and Financial Committee elected M. Pedro Lopez (Philippines) vice-chairman. The committee, after hearing a report from M. Mudalier (India) on the Preparatory Commission’s recommendations regarding the Economic and Social Council, decided to establish an economic and employment commission, also a statistical commission.
