“WESTPORT NEWS”
CHANGE TO EVENING PAPER (P.A.) WESTPORT, This Day. After 56 years of publication as a morning. newspaper, the “Westport News” to-day turned over to an evening publication. The “News” made its first appearance in IS6B as a tri-weekly and became a morning daily in 1889. During virtually the whole of the period as a daily the newspaper was in the hands of the Atkin family— the late Mr Walter Atkin and his two sons. Mr C. Atkin and Mr S. Strachan, the latter editor since 1599, retired in July last, when the new proprietors, Mr F. - Hinton, the present editor, and Mr A. L. Wood, manager, left the “Otago Daily Times’ to become principals in a small private company. The “News” is the only newspaper published iu the Buller County, and has been associated with the advancement of the district almost since the earliest mining days.
