HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS

BOXING DAY TROTS VARIOUS OTHER ENTERTAINMENTS Probably the main sporting attraction at Ashburton during the holidays will be the Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer meeting on Boxing Day. Most interest will centre round the Ashburton Cup Handicap, for which the champions Clockwork, Bronze Eagle and Haughty have accepted. The. absence of Gold Bar, which made a joke of the contest in 1943, to win by 80 yards, will disappoint many, but the race this yeai* should not lack interest. On New Year’s Day and the following day there will be a representative cricket match at the Domain between Ashburton and Southland. A strong team has been selected to represent ** Ashburton, and the side should give a good account of itself. A practice match will be held on December 29. There will be two important bowling fixtures during the holidays —a progressive pairs tournament will be held on the Ashburton club’s greens on Boxing Day and there will be an pairs tournament on January 2. ' There will be no lack of entertainment for keen dancers. The Radiant Hall Syndicate will hold fixtures in the Radiant Hall on Christmas Eve, Boxing Night and New Year’s Eve, the last-mentioned being a daylight to daylight affair. The Ashburton Imperial Harmonica Band will hold its last dance of the year at the Orange Hall on Friday night. - Aft excellent bill of fare has been prepared for screening at the St. James Theatre. Commencing on Mon- ; day, there will be changes of programme daily until New Day, with the exception of next Thursday and Friday. There will be matinee and evening screenings every day during that period, except Christmas Day, when there will be an evening screen* ' ing only, and Sunday, when there will be no screening.
