HAPPY GATHERING
COUNCIL STAFF AND MEMBERS As the meeting of the Borough Council last evening was the last this year, members and their wives and members of the staff and their wives gathered afterward for supper. Several toasts were honoured. ■ The Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) thanked the Council and staff for the co-operation he had received throughout the year. He made particular reference to the work of the Town Clerk (Mr R. C. Major) remarking how it had been brought home to him that Mr Major was very highly thought or in other centres. Mr A. A. McDonald said the work of the outside staff had been particularly arduous this year on account of the severe weather. Mr H. G. Ferner referred to the work of the Domain staff, and Mr S. W. Gower praised the work of the librarian (Mrs B. E. Opie) and those who had helped her. Others who came in for special mention were Miss E. Wakelin at the Fire Station and Mrs W. Robinson, who is in charge of the Women’s Rest Room. Mr Major and the engineer (Mr A. G. Macfarlane) replied on behalf of. the inside and outside staffs respectively.
