DONATIONS TO BANDS
DIFFERENTIATION ALLEGED PIPE BAND DISSATISFIED Alleged differentiation in the annual donations by the Borough Council to the Ashburton County Scottish Society’s Pipe Band and the Ashburton Silver Band was the subject of a letter received by the Council last evening from the secretary of the Pipe Band (Mr J. R. Horsburgh).
The letter requested, if possible, an increase in the donation to the Pipe Band, stating that members had reason to believe the donation io the Silver Band was considerably greater than that received by the Pipe Band. With all due respect to. the victory of the Silver Band at the contest at Kangiora, it was felt that 1 lie services given by the Pipe Band at, various fixtures were equal to that if the Silver Band, and members could not conceive of any reason for-a conspicuous difference in donations. “The Pipe Band is trying by various means to raise funds,” said the Mayor. “The Silver Band has the larger, membership, and should get, more than the Pipe Band.” It was decided, on the suggestion of Mr A. A. McDonald, that the matter be held over until the Estimates for next year were being considered.
