Tlir* Minister of Works (the rion. R. Semple) visited Mount Somers to-day to inspect deposits of silica sand there. H© and his party later had lunch in Ashburton.
Mr D. C. Kidd, M.P., for Waitak who underwent an operation on Fri day in the Timaru Hospital, is male ing satisfactory progress.
Mr T. G. G. Beck, assistant-engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, who has been seriously ill, is expected to resume duty on February 1. Mr Beck who is recuperating in the Marlborough Sounds, attended the official opening at Kaikoura on Saturday of the South Island main trunk railway.
Mr R. Cl. Macfarlane, who will retire on Wednesday after 13 years as headmaster of the Ashburton Fast School, was entertained at morning tea by members of the Canterbury Education Board at Christchurch on Friday. The' chairman (Mr C. S. Thompson) made eulogistic reference to Mr Macfar lane’s long and valuable service as a teacher.
