activities at school In terms, of a decision by the Ashburton East School Committee last evening, it. will seek inclusion of the cost of laying out the grounds in the estimate for the new school. Application will be made as well for extra rooms to relieve congestion in the infant department. The chairman (Mr J. K. Mather) welcomed Mr E. H. Childs, who has been absent from several meetings on account of ill-health; and Mr A. M. Sutherland, who has replaced Mr H. W. Hayward on the committee, the latter having left the district. Messrs Childs and N. W. Corbett were appointed a visiting committee for next month.
Following discussion of a circular about the insurance of pupils being taken to and from the dental clinic for treatment, it was decided to seek a ruling from the Education Board regarding the liability of the Clinic Committee or the School Committee. A .complaint about a fence on the boundary of the grounds for the new school was referred to the Board. Reporting for the Visiting Committee, Messrs Childs and E. E. Beach said the windows and the drainage system had been repaired. The Silver Ban# was granted the use of the grounds this evening. The headmaster (Mr S. G. Macfar-la-ne) reported that the roll number was 456, and the average attendance 424. Arrangements had been made for connecting the school gardens with the water supply. Arrangements were made for the break-up of the infant department on Friday. The main school will break up on December 18, when the speaker will be the Rev. W. T. Blight. It was agreed to inquire from the Railway Department if an excursion train could be run to Timaru in February.
