CONDITION OF HESS

REFUGE IN AMNESIA (Rec. 9.30) NUREMBERG, Dec. 3. After again examining Hess, the psychiatrist, Dr. G. M. Gilbert, said, he was confirmed in his opininion that Hess was suffering from hysterical amnesia, which “contains the elements of deliberate motivation.” Hess’s claim that he had simulated amnesia was only a rationalisation. Dr Gilbert asked Hess whether his previous loss of memory was really faked. Hess replied: “Map be I just did not try to remenr ber.” Questioned whether he knew that Hitler had changed the names of all streets named after him, Hess at first said yes and then admitted he had not known, but assumed it. was so. Dr. Gilbert said: “The reply showed the defensive mechanism of an hysteric personality reacting to an idea catastrophic to his ego and seeking refuge in amnesia.”
