FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Dec 4, 1895) Visit of Bishop—When in Ashburton recently, Bishop Julius intended visiting the Mt. Somers district, but this intention was frustrated by the inclemency of the weather. His Lordship has intiminated that he will hold a confirmation service at Staveley Hall on Monday, December 9. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian/’ Dec. 4, 1920) Meat Prices—The ruling prices for fat stock at the Ashburton yards at present are reported to be lOd per lb. for lamb and 6d per lb. for wether mutton and 42s to 45s per 1001 b. for beef. The retail prices in the local butchers* shops are with the exception of lamb, almost double these prices. This morning an Ashburton housewife was charged Is and 2d for a pound of rump steak and lOd for chops.
