ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET.

EXCEPTIONAL VALUES. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 22. Smaller yardings of fat cattle and fat sheep at Addington to-day caused another lift in prices of up to 40s a head for best steers and up to 10s a head for primest wethers and ewes. Porkers also showed a rise, and there was a good demand for the few store sheep offering. Store Sheep.—The entry was only 1496. With the prospect of a flush of growth there was a keen demand for all classes, and > prices showed a substantial increase on recent values. Best wether hoggets made from 22s to 25s 9d. Four- and 6-tooth wethers made 26s 6d, and others 20s 6d to 225. A dratf of Roiftney ewes in lamb to Southdown rams made from 29s to 325, and sound-mouth ewes in lamb to Southdown rams 32s 6d. A pen of two-tooth ewes in lamb to BorderLeicester rams sold for 29s 6d. The first of the season’s ewes, with' lambs at foot attracted keen bidding, 72 ewes with 73 lambs selling at 15s lOd, all counted. Fat Sheep.—The entry was about 2000, against 3000 last week, and with most butchers being short of supplies there was a scramble for sheep from tjj.e outset. Prices reached the highest level for many years and were only exceeded by the spectacular rises ruling at the Show sales some years back. The highest price for hoggets was 79s 7d, and the bulk of the sheep in this section made over 60s. The highest price for 2-tooth ewes was 58s Id, and for aged ewes 54s Id. The demand was abnormal throughout, and many butchers failed to fulfil their requirements. Fat Cattle.—To-day’s prices were the highest of the year, possibly the only market in the last decade to exceed them being the one two years ago. On the average values for good be<ff were up another 40s a head on the advance of 60s recorded last week. High prices were not confined to the primest beef, as cows of secondary class made a nearly proportionate advance. A few of the .top pens of steers averaged £3O and more, numerous single heifers from £2O upwards, and more cows sold at from £l4 to £l6 than for a long time. Best beef made from 62s to 60s, good 58s to 61s, medium 54s to 575; good cow to 475, and secondary cow to 4j2s 6d, all per lOOlb. Extra prime steers made £2B to £32 7s 6d, prime steers £25 to £27 10s, extra prime heifers £lB 15s to £24 12s 6d, prime heifers £l6 5s to £18; extra prime cows £l6 10s to £2l 17s. 6d, and prime cows £l4 5s to £ls 15s. Fat Pigs—The yarding of porkers was small, and competition was keen and values rose by 3s to 3s'6d a head. Choppers were in medium supply and the sale was an exceptionally good one. The yarding of baconers was of medium size and the easing recorded last week was more than recovered. The average price per lb was 9d to MTHE SHARE MARKET.
