LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 23, 1895). Good Golfing.—On the golf course yesterday Mr O. M. Brooke made an extraordinary putt. Playing against Mac Lean Dunn, both had come within about 40 yards of the pound house hole from the terrace in one stroke. Mr Brooke “holed out” with his second stroke, thus making the hole in two strokes—a record not likely to be equalled “once in a blue moon.” TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 23, 1920). Land Boom.—Although the house market is dull at present, land is still - v booming in the County, according to a local agent. In many cases farmers havn only bought to sell again and have come out of the process very well. An instance was given of a farmer who bought 130 acres at Wakanui last January at £37 10s an acre. He sold the property again recently at £SO an acre.
